My Sister's Keeper Review

Title:My Sister's Keeper
Publisher:Washington Square Press
Format:Paperback
Pub Date:02/01/2005
Pages:448 pages

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Review:

I admit its been three years since I read this book but its ghost still haunts me. I was traveling for my youth camp and all of friends and I decided that we would charter  a bus to get down to Atlanta. It was on my way there that I met My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. My friend had lent it to me because I remember at that time I had my own "sister's keeper" incident. So I began to read this book.

I can relate most to Anna because I have a sister as well. Its natural that you want to protect them from the evils of the world . I think that was Anna was trying to do she was trying to protect her sister who is sick. Its very hard on a person  to lose and even the thought of someone you love dying slowly and painfully is horrible.

Imagine growing up with the idea in your head that you only exist to save your sister. To be known as your sister's only savior and to be treated as such would have been better. But Anna and Kate's parents treated Anna as a car. Something could have been easily used for part to trade with and batter. I really hated Anna's parents for this. Never in the book did it seem that they saw Anna and Kate in the same light, as equal daughters that they produced. They never did  ask Anna what she thought on these "treatments". They just automatically assumed that she wanted to do it, that she HAD to do it. It was wrong and is still wrong for a parent to play favorites. As parent you of course have your "favorite child" but that does not mean to disregard your other children. They both were conceived that same way. Right?

So when Ann decides that  she has enough, that she is sick of the treatments and she is tired of being treated this way, her parents have ( sadly to say) a hissy fit. The couldn't understand and would not understand that they younger daughter was suffering. You can't only suffer due to physical sickness, they are other types of sickness. She just had enough and could not stand for it anymore it seems. If I were her in this situation I would have left a long time ago. They ( referring to the parents) made it seem as if she was bad wanting to be free! She was a bad daughter for wanting the treatments to stop. For wanting to live her life normally. For forsaking her sister. The treatments and Kate's disease and their cycle of life  would have just continued and continued.

End-  I was not expecting the end. The book drove me through emotional freeway with no handle on the steering wheel. It was beautifully writitten and it one of the best books of all time. I do not say this lightly. This book has made an impression on me that still stands here in my heart today. I think everyone should read this book. This ghost of a book  haunts me today and helped to realize more of my family 's love.

I rate this book:

This book was absolutely amazing and life changing. I got a couple of life morals out of this book. It has left an impression all these years and I am still thinking about it. I read this in highschool and I recommend this for all high-school  and even middle school students .Trust me on this.
