Read: My Sister's Keeper

My Sister's Keeper Review

Title:My Sister's Keeper
Publisher:Washington Square Press
Format:Paperback
Pub Date:02/01/2005
Pages:448 pages

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Review:

I admit its been three years since I read this book but its ghost still haunts me. I was traveling for my youth camp and all of friends and I decided that we would charter  a bus to get down to Atlanta. It was on my way there that I met My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. My friend had lent it to me because I remember at that time I had my own "sister's keeper" incident. So I began to read this book.

I can relate most to Anna because I have a sister as well. Its natural that you want to protect them from the evils of the world . I think that was Anna was trying to do she was trying to protect her sister who is sick. Its very hard on a person  to lose and even the thought of someone you love dying slowly and painfully is horrible.

Imagine growing up with the idea in your head that you only exist to save your sister. To be known as your sister's only savior and to be treated as such would have been better. But Anna and Kate's parents treated Anna as a car. Something could have been easily used for part to trade with and batter. I really hated Anna's parents for this. Never in the book did it seem that they saw Anna and Kate in the same light, as equal daughters that they produced. They never did  ask Anna what she thought on these "treatments". They just automatically assumed that she wanted to do it, that she HAD to do it. It was wrong and is still wrong for a parent to play favorites. As parent you of course have your "favorite child" but that does not mean to disregard your other children. They both were conceived that same way. Right?

So when Ann decides that  she has enough, that she is sick of the treatments and she is tired of being treated this way, her parents have ( sadly to say) a hissy fit. The couldn't understand and would not understand that they younger daughter was suffering. You can't only suffer due to physical sickness, they are other types of sickness. She just had enough and could not stand for it anymore it seems. If I were her in this situation I would have left a long time ago. They ( referring to the parents) made it seem as if she was bad wanting to be free! She was a bad daughter for wanting the treatments to stop. For wanting to live her life normally. For forsaking her sister. The treatments and Kate's disease and their cycle of life  would have just continued and continued.

End-  I was not expecting the end. The book drove me through emotional freeway with no handle on the steering wheel. It was beautifully writitten and it one of the best books of all time. I do not say this lightly. This book has made an impression on me that still stands here in my heart today. I think everyone should read this book. This ghost of a book  haunts me today and helped to realize more of my family 's love.

I rate this book:

This book was absolutely amazing and life changing. I got a couple of life morals out of this book. It has left an impression all these years and I am still thinking about it. I read this in highschool and I recommend this for all high-school  and even middle school students .Trust me on this.

Read: Legacy by Cayla Kluver

Title: Legacy
Author: Cayla Kluver
Publisher: Harlequin
Publication Date: 6/28/11
Purchase:  You can click the book to purchase on Amazon

I admit the number one reason why I picked up this book was because of the cover. The girl on the cover is looking so sad while clothed in white. She is sitting at the feet of guilded chair at someone maybe even some man’s feet. As soon as I saw the cover of I thought of submission or a girl in a gilded cage.

Secret Society Girl Book Review

Secret Society Girl by Diana Peterfreund

Living the college life, partying, finals, and looking for jobs. That's the the true of essence of college is it not? What happens when you get out of college? Isnt life just the same? Well for  Amy who is of the elite students at the Eli University & the editor-in-chief of Eli literary magazine, there is something more than just sororities planned on her mind. She has the perfect group to join and the perfect internship over the summer and shes practically a shoo in for the sorority she wants as well. There is only one problem a secret society wants her to join them. There is no problem at all right? I guess if it wasnt for the fact its an All BOYS ( Men I should really say hot sexy men) society! What a girl going to do with all this testosterone running rampant?

It took me awhile to get used to the book. Majority of the book (about 75%) was about the intiation process and personally got my tired after awhile( I swear I fell asleep!) I was really debating if this book was my cup of tea to read at first but I decided to dig on and I was awarded with a gem of a story. I learned to like Amy more and outright personality and how she never claims she is perfect unlike the stereotyping of sorority girls out there. She admits he weaknesses and her fears as well , as her imperfections.

I liked the modern writing of this story. It was humorous, it was in fact real. This book did not try to “fairytale” anything about life * despite being recruited by all men fictional secret society) and how Amy lived. She kept to the truth and I liked how she never tried lying to herself and was logical the whole entire time.

Even though it takes awhile for you to get into the story, I think overall Secret Society Girl is an ok read and I rate " Secret Society Girl" 3 stars out of 5.

Favorite Character in the Book

I think of all my favorite character in the book would have to be the rich and spoiled princess Clarissa. Despite having all the fortune she could ever want and fame.Clarissa lives the seemingly perfect life .She has problems and she is not afraid to admit them. She is truthful even though you know sometimes the truth hurts. I love her fashion sense and how she just radiates confidence with everyone. Clarissa also has other sides to her, such as being kind, courageous,  and standing up for what she truly believes in. I think she is the true heroine in this story.

Delirium Book Review

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

“ Love is a Disease”

Have you ever heard that saying? Love affects you in all types of ways, from your thinking habits to your eating habits, sometimes you can even  just “tell” someone is in love just from their appearance and the way they speak. Love is a disease that worms  its way into your heart and changes you in ways you can’t even imagine.

In this new society created in Portland. Love is a disease that is dangerous and can kill. A cure has been found and will lead the world to peace and happines. For if there is no love, there is nor hate as well, no jealous, no anger, and no fear. In this society there is no love.

Lena Halloway is a teenager that has not be cured of amor deliria nervosa, the love disease. You dont usually get cured until your 18th birthday and she has exactly 95 days till her procedure where she will be evauated, paired for marraige, and given rules and regulations to follow by. She fenced neatly into the same routine over and over again.  Lena is glad she is because she has dark little secret of her own. A secret where people costantly whisper behind her back. This secret is actually a great shame on the family and no one tries to talk about it.

Many people are afraid of the procedure. Some people even resist. But I’m not afraid. I can’t wait. I would have it done tomorrow if I could.....
Lena Halloway

Its by chance she meets her salvation in the form of a boy, a boy named Alex who  she shouldnt be seeing, dating , nether the less even touching! Alex opens up her eyes and she sees the world she lives in , in a new light. She learns to the true meaning of love , family, and sacrifice.

Favorite Character in Delirium

This is Alex in my head.
Alex glances at me. “Thats poetry,” he says.

He takes a step forward and kisses my forehead softly. “ I love thee to the level of every day’s most quiet need....”

My favorite character would have to be Alex. I like the way he just “feels” in the book as if he is vivid  colors of the fiery red  in the grey world of Delirium. He brings everything to life. I also loved how Lauren the author, throws in his love of books for a good measure. Especially his love of poetry . Who can resist a hottie that reads  and quotes poetry right?

Book Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Divergent by Veronica Roth

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

Divergent by Veronica Roth had me reading and reading all the way to the end.I just couldn't put it down. The  basic premise of the story  is a girl who does not fit in with what her parents expect of her and wants to go her own way. She knows the path she has chosen is difficult but she is willing to go through with it even at the cost of never seeing her family again. Tris world is set in a dystopia world  controlled by a government who never wants a war. Everyone is divided into 5 factions : Abnegation,Amity,Candor,Dauntless, Erudite. Each factions stands for trait that fits your personality. But there is a problem with that  Tris  is Divergent and know one must know.

I felt as if Beatrice as well as Tris has grown on me through out the novel. Beatrice has  expreinced hardships and reshaping of her ingrained ideas of the world. Everything has changed now and has become  Tris a but kicking tough Dauntless. She has learned to loved, cry, fight, as well as survive.

I think personally the reason why this YA read is riveting is because we too as young adults face these challenges. Perhaps not in the setting of a dystopian world but in a world where  we try to figure out who we are and what we plan to do in the future.
I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. I am Divergent. And I can't be controlled...

I learned something from Tris. You are who you are and you should follow your dreams.

  • Divergent is the first book of the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth. The second book should be out late 2011 or early 2012.

What I Have Read So Far: Shiver

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

I was throughly interested in this book because I have heard such good things from fellow book reviewers. Plus I wanted to do the read Along with elzziebooks on her channel on YouTube for Linger.

When I first read the synopsis I was excited to read it.  As I began to read the first chapter the first thing I noticed was that the chapters was short! At first the chapter was like one page for each  chapter and I was confused. I ALMOST put down the book . Then it got worse... The chapter changed from one back and forth between Sam and Grace. I never really liked books that change the point of view , I prefer to grow close to the character instead.

I decided to give this book a chance since everyone is raving about it but so far. I really dont like where this is going...

Sarah Dessen Week: Just Listen Book Review

Sarah Dessen Week at: www.ieatwords.net

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

Annabelle Green is the girl who seems to have everything. She is a model, on tv, and is one of the most popular girls at school. She is the last child of seemingly gorgeous model sisters. They are known as the perfect family with the glass house. But as you know nothing is as it seems...
I thought Just Listen was a wonderful read. I felt really attached to the characters and what they went through. Let me warn you though,  this book is not some petty school novel read.Just Listen deals with issues sexuality, body image, music, honesty, self prevalence, self respect, and truthfulness.

At first I was Annabelle Greene to be some preppy cheerleader type with a perfect life and just basically attracted to the misunderstood emo boy who always listened to music. But it was not like that all. It all began the previous summer where some unknown event occurred that caused Annabelle to fall out with her so called friend named Sophie. From there She found Owen the "elightned" music listener who finds silence to "loud".  He controls his anger by drowning everything with music. Annabelle is drawn to him because of his honesty and his music and they soon become friends. Annabelle and Owen are exact opposites but despite that they find comfort in each others company. There are also other stories that run through this book and it all ties off into one final statement in the end "Just Listen".

Most Loved Character:
I felt more attached to Owen than to any other character in the story because I have once ran my own radio show and I know how it feels to become so "obsessed" with music. It starts to drown out everything, changes your emotions, your life story, and your being, I loved the way he was in the story. I liked he was honest but also got angry at times, expressing his emotions , trying to do his best under the circumstances.

Book Review: 13 Little Blue Envelopes

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson

“Va-va-voom”
- Your Runaway Aunt

“Sometimes artist like to catch themselves looking out, let the world see them for once. Its a signature. This one is a very bold one. But this is also a witnessing. We want to remember, and we want to be remembered. That's why we paint.”
- Mari ( famous artist friend of Peg’s)

13 Little Blue Envelopes is a book about an adventure and finding one self. The story begins with Ginny who is the niece of an eccentric artistic aunt named Peg. Aunt Peg sets Ginny out on an adventure that will change her life forever.  Ginny travels the world with no way of knowing what she should do there or even find there. She goes on the prompt of 13 little Blue envelopes that were sent to her before her Aunt Peg died. This game of letters have been played before and is the last wish of Aunt Peg.  The book goes on and on as she meets new friends new experiences as she travels the country.

Overall I thought it was a good read. Not something I would overly engross my self in but overall the book kept me interested . Ginny started to grow on me after a while.I felt as if I was left hanging at the end.  But luckily there is one more book to go called the The Last Little Blue Envelope which continues the story.
